Chatbot human handoff with the conversation intact

A handoff moves a customer conversation from the AI agent to a person who can continue it. The important part is the context: the agent should be able to see what the customer asked, what the AI answered and what remains unresolved. In Conecto, the conversation continues through the shared inbox rather than beginning as an unrelated request.

Plan the handoff around the situations your team actually handles. A routine policy question may be answered from approved knowledge, while an exception or account-specific request may need someone to review it. Keep the route to a person understandable and decide who will own the conversation once it reaches the team.

A good handoff has three parts: the AI recognizes that it should step aside, the customer is told a person is coming and roughly when, and the teammate who joins can read everything that was said. If any part is missing, customers repeat themselves or leave, and the AI gets the blame for a routing problem.

When nobody is online, the handoff should still end somewhere. Conecto can ask for an email address so the reply reaches the customer after they have left the page, and the conversation stays in the shared inbox for whoever starts next. The exact wording for each moment, from the offer to the first human reply, is collected in our guide to chatbot handoff message examples.

Handle an exception without starting again

A customer asks about a return after the usual deadline. The AI can explain the published policy, but a person may need to decide whether the circumstances call for further review. Chatbot human handoff keeps that request with the preceding messages so the team can see the policy already discussed and ask a useful follow-up question.

The agent can read the saved customer context, add an internal note and involve the teammate responsible for the next step. Once the issue is handled, review whether the published article needs clarification or whether the question was a legitimate exception. A clear handoff supports both outcomes: more useful knowledge for routine questions and an understandable route to a person when the customer needs one.
