Will AI replace bookkeepers and accountants?

Software is taking over the routine entries in bookkeeping, and the work that stays with people moves toward review and advice. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects jobs for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to fall 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, as software automates many of their tasks, and jobs for accountants and auditors to grow 5 percent.

What the job numbers say

The Occupational Outlook Handbook, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' guide to occupations, splits the work into two jobs: the clerks who record the data, and the accountants and auditors who prepare and examine the records.1,2

Occupation Jobs in 2025 Projected change, 2025 to 2035 Openings a year Median pay, 2025
Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks 1,532,400 Down 6%, or 85,600 jobs About 144,100 $50,6701
Accountants and auditors 1,595,200 Up 5%, or 79,400 jobs About 115,300 $83,6802

The clerk numbers fall, yet the handbook still expects about 144,100 openings a year over the decade, all of them from people moving to other work or retiring.1 It puts the fall down to software, which has automated many of the clerks' tasks so the same work takes fewer people, and it expects clerks to take on a more analytical and advisory role.1 Employment of accountants and auditors grows faster than the average for all occupations, and the handbook notes that AI and robotic process automation take over some of their routine tasks and leave more time for analysis.2

What AI does in the books today

The handbook lists a clerk's daily duties: posting transactions, recording payments, producing reports such as balance sheets, checking figures and reconciling differences.1 Intuit's QuickBooks plans now list AI features that categorize expenses and clean up the books.3 On Conecto, our product, an agent runs these steps with one tool call each:

  • importing a bank statement, in CSV, CAMT.053 or OFX, without importing a line twice;4
  • matching each bank line to the invoice or bill it pays, or to an account;4
  • booking expenses with their receipts attached;4
  • sending invoices, recording payments and reminding customers who are late;6
  • pulling a profit and loss, a balance sheet or a tax report when someone asks.4

Here is one of those steps, taken from the documented example of Conecto's matching tool. Hansen & Voss, a restaurant-equipment wholesaler in Hamburg, tells its agent: "The 238 euros to Hamburg Energie is the electricity we booked, and the 89.25 to Würth is warehouse supplies with 19% VAT." The agent calls one tool, and both lines come back matched: €238.00 to Hamburg Energie for the warehouse electricity in October, and €89.25 to Würth for packing tape.4

Each step is one tool call with a price. On Conecto, importing a statement and running any report are free, and matching costs $0.02 per bank line, so a month of 300 lines costs $6.00.4

What stays with people

  • Judgment on unusual items: a payment that fits two invoices, a refund recorded as income, a supplier who changed bank details.
  • The close and the filings: the year-end close, the tax return and the advice built on the numbers.
  • Accountability: a person signs off the year and answers for it.

The software can make that division of work hard to break. In Conecto's books, entries are never edited or deleted, and a reversing entry corrects a mistake. A period can be locked once someone reviews it.4 Your tax adviser gets DATEV, FEC or CSV exports, and none of Conecto's tools files a tax return.4

What changes for a small business

The agent keeps the books every day. The adviser reviews them each month or quarter and no longer keys them in. The cost follows the work done, with no subscription.5 Sending 40 invoices and matching 300 bank lines in a month costs $10.40 on Conecto, at $0.01 to create an invoice, $0.10 to send it6 and $0.02 to match a bank line.4 For comparison, Intuit's pricing page lists QuickBooks Online Simple Start at $38 a month, with 50% off for the first three months.3

How to start, a month at a time

Hand the work over in stages, so you see what the agent gets right before it works alone.

  • First month: suggestions only. Import the bank statement and let the agent propose a match for each line. A person accepts or corrects every one, and the corrections show where its rules need work.
  • Second month: the routine lines. Let it book the payments that repeat, such as rent, power and software subscriptions, and keep reviewing the rest.
  • Third month: close the period. Once the month is reviewed, lock it, so nothing changes after your adviser has seen it, and send them the export.
  • From then on: exceptions. The agent books what it recognizes and lists what it doesn't, and a person spends the review time on that list.

Keep payments and refunds behind approval through all of it. An agent that books entries can be wrong in a way you fix with a reversing entry; money that has left the account is harder to get back.

If you are a bookkeeper

The work moves toward review and advice, the more analytical role the handbook expects clerks to take on.1 Checking what the agent matched, fixing what it couldn't and explaining exceptions become the daily job. Setting up the system matters more too: the chart of accounts, the matching rules and which actions wait for a person's approval. The projections point the same way, with fewer clerk jobs and more accountant and auditor jobs over the decade.1,2

Questions

Can AI do bookkeeping on its own?

It can do the daily entries: importing statements, matching lines, booking expenses and sending invoices.4,6 A person still reviews the exceptions, closes the year and files the taxes.

Will AI replace accountants?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of accountants and auditors to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 115,300 openings a year.2

Which bookkeeping tasks should stay with a person?

Anything that changes a locked period, every tax filing, payments above a limit you choose, and the judgment calls on unusual items.
