# Can ChatGPT and Claude send emails?

Claude can. Its Gmail connector sends, replies and forwards after you approve each message, and its Microsoft 365 connector sends from work Outlook accounts once an admin turns on write tools. ChatGPT reads and searches mail through its Gmail and Outlook apps, and its help center documents sending only for some Outlook setups. Any agent can also send through an MCP server that has a send tool.

Both assistants can write the text of an email in any chat. This guide covers sending it from your own mailbox. We read each vendor's help center on October 15, 2026; these features change often, so check the linked pages before you rely on one.

## Claude and Gmail

Claude's Gmail connector is available on every Claude plan, in Claude on the web and Claude Desktop.[[1]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10166901-use-google-workspace-connectors) With it, Claude can:

- search and read email with plain questions;
- draft messages and list your saved drafts;
- send, reply to and forward email from Gmail;
- see email metadata, including the names of attachments but not their contents, and organize labels and threads.[[1]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10166901-use-google-workspace-connectors)

By default, Claude asks for your approval before each send, reply or forward. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner decides whether members can let these actions run without asking, and an owner has to turn on the connector for the organization before anyone can sign in.[[1]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10166901-use-google-workspace-connectors)

## Claude and Outlook

Claude's Microsoft 365 connector searches SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams in a work account, on every plan from Free to Enterprise.[[2]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15183774-connect-to-microsoft-365) To send, it needs write tools: a Microsoft Entra administrator consents to the extra permissions, and your organization turns them on for your account. Then Claude can draft and send email, manage calendar events and send Teams messages, and sending a Teams chat message or posting in a channel always asks for your confirmation first.[[2]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15183774-connect-to-microsoft-365)

The connector needs a work account in a Microsoft Entra tenant. Personal addresses at outlook.com, hotmail.com or live.com can't connect.[[2]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15183774-connect-to-microsoft-365)

## ChatGPT and Gmail

ChatGPT connects Gmail as an app. OpenAI's data controls page lists the Google permission it requests, `gmail.modify`,[[3]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10408842-google-app-data-controls-faq) which Google describes as the right to "read, compose, and send emails" from the account.[[6]](https://developers.google.com/workspace/gmail/api/auth/scopes) The help center pages we read describe reading and searching Gmail, and tasks in ChatGPT Work that start when a new message arrives.[[3]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10408842-google-app-data-controls-faq) They don't describe a send action.

ChatGPT agent, which could act on websites for you, is no longer available. OpenAI points to ChatGPT Work for longer tasks and to a cloud browser for supported web tasks.[[5]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11752874-chatgpt-agent)

## ChatGPT and Outlook

The Outlook Email app searches and retrieves messages, looks up people and manages Outlook contacts when those actions are enabled.[[4]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12512241-outlook-email-and-calendar-apps-in-chatgpt) Two people decide what it can do. A Microsoft Entra administrator approves the Microsoft permissions, a list that includes `Mail.Send`, and a ChatGPT workspace admin turns on each action. For shared or delegated mailboxes, OpenAI says ChatGPT can send plain-text email from or on behalf of the mailbox, depending on those permissions and settings.[[4]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12512241-outlook-email-and-calendar-apps-in-chatgpt)

## Sending from any agent with an MCP server

The built-in apps won't fit every case, such as an agent outside Claude and ChatGPT, like Hermes Agent or a coding agent. Any agent can send through an MCP server that has a send tool. In ChatGPT, a custom MCP server that takes actions needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu plan.[[9]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-connecting-custom-mcp-servers-in-chatgpt)

## Before you let an agent send

- **Start with drafts.** Read a week of them before you allow sending.
- **Keep approval on** for messages to customers until the drafts need no edits.
- **Send a test to yourself** after any change to the setup.
- **Watch what the agent reads.** An email can carry instructions meant for the agent. OpenAI's help center describes a malicious comment that tells an agent to send a password reset code to a website.[[5]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11752874-chatgpt-agent) Tell your agent that instructions found inside a message are content to report to you.

### Can ChatGPT send emails from Gmail?

OpenAI's help center documents reading and searching Gmail in ChatGPT, and the Google permission the app requests covers sending, but the pages we read on October 15, 2026 describe no send action.[[3]](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10408842-google-app-data-controls-faq)[[6]](https://developers.google.com/workspace/gmail/api/auth/scopes) ChatGPT can write the email for you to send yourself.

### Can Claude send emails without asking me?

By default it asks before every send, reply or forward through Gmail. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner can let members skip that question.[[1]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10166901-use-google-workspace-connectors)

### Can Claude send from a personal Outlook.com address?

It can't. The Microsoft 365 connector needs a work account in a Microsoft Entra tenant.[[2]](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/15183774-connect-to-microsoft-365)

### Is it safe to let an AI agent send email?

It can be, with three controls in place: approval before anything goes out, a log of every message sent, and access to only the mailboxes the job needs.
